Why Have an Outdoor Classroom? Outdoor classrooms provide unique opportunities for students to gain knowledge and obtain new skills in a natural setting. It also allows educators to utilize different teaching styles and concepts in an inviting venue. Not only can it be integrated into our science program, but it can be utilized in the areas of art, ecology, math, special education, presentations, and writing. This is truly an exciting way to teach our youth in a more "hands on" fashion.
Brookfield Elementary's Concept Brookfield Elementary has a wonderful wooded site just south of the school well situated for the project. Once completed, the classroom would provide stadium style seating for approximately 100 students depending on the age/size of the students. The center would house a small stage or lecture area and will be handicap accessible. To reduce maintenance efforts, natural vegetation and durable products will be utilized. The long term plan includes benches, a variety of small gardens, bird houses, and a small nature trail.
